How-to
Storing Samagri So It Lasts
Most of it keeps for months. A few things do not, and those are the ones people get wrong.
Puja samagri is mostly dry goods, which makes it forgiving. The exceptions are worth knowing.
Keeps almost indefinitely
Akshat, supari, cloves, cardamom and dry haldi. An airtight container away from the stove and they will outlast the year.
Keeps, but fades
Kumkum and chandan powder hold their colour better in the dark. A tin beats a clear jar on a sunlit shelf.
Watch these
Camphor evaporates in an open box — keep it sealed or you will find an empty tin. Oil goes rancid, so buy the size you will finish in a season. Cotton wicks pick up damp and then refuse to light properly; a closed jar solves it.
Buy for the season, not the year
The saving on a large pack disappears the moment half of it is thrown out. This is why our kits are sized by month rather than by bulk.
